An American looking to travel to the UK [Reader Story]

✉️ [Reader Story: Larry Villella, New York City]
Thanks for your blog, I check it frequently to track any possible news about the US-UK border re-opening. I am a fully vaxxed New Yorker who has now been able to travel to Europe twice. I visited Greece in June. I had planned to go to London over the July 4 holiday, but because of the quarantine requirement, I changed my plans to go to Paris instead. I had a wonderful time, but really want to see my friends in London.

I again have tickets to London in August. Hotel bookings. Tickets to a show on the west end. All of which will evaporate (or more likely get redirected to another European country) if the UK doesn't end the silly quarantine restriction for vaxxed people. The economic impact this is having is massive and unnecessary. But even the uncertainty is problematic; I can't wait until the last minute to change my plans, I have to decide well enough in advance to be able to get advance purchase requirements for reasonable flights.

There are so many ways this could be done safely. France requires a vaccination and the US requires a test to return. The UK could require both. And hell, some of my friends in London are able to visit the US because they're US citizens - they even came here to get vaccinated! The restrictions don't make any sense in either direction.
