It's really important to have an ESTA before you travel to America. Something that a lot of people do forget is applying for one, they mistakingly think that their ESTA is still valid, bear in mind that it may have run out, especially if you've not travelled to the US in some time. So do yourself a favour and doublecheck that your ESTA is still valid.
Once the travel ban was lifted and I was ready to travel back to America I found that I needed to renew my ESTA. It's a quick and easy process and it only costs $14. But you won't be able to enter America without your ESTA.
Also please do not leave it until the last minute, occasionally it will take a day or two for authorisation, if it does say authorisation pending please do not panic, this is quite normal. It is worse to apply during school holidays or at peak times of the year, it can take a little longer, so please build into your time parameters your application for an ESTA before you travel to America.
