Travelling to the USA? Remember to check the status of your ESTA. Here’s my advice on applying for an ESTA and Important Information about US Travel Authorisation.

It's important to check the status of your ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) before traveling to the USA for several reasons. Firstly, the status will confirm whether your travel authorization has been approved, ensuring that you are authorized to enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program.

Additionally, due to the impact of Covid-19 and the temporary travel bans or restrictions that were put in place, it's crucial to check the status of your ESTA even if you had a valid authorisation in the past. The pandemic and related measures may have led to the expiration of your ESTA, requiring you to reapply or update your travel authorisation.

By checking the status, you can ensure that your ESTA is still valid and up-to-date, allowing you to navigate any necessary steps before your planned travel to the USA. This process helps avoid any last-minute surprises or complications at the port of entry, providing peace of mind and a smoother travel experience.

How to apply for an ESTA to travel to the USA.

Applications may be submitted at any time prior to travel to the United States. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that travel authorization applications be submitted at least 72 hours prior to travel. Unless revoked, travel authorizations are valid for two years from the date of authorization, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

The fee for travelers intending to travel to the United States with an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) was recently increased from $14 to $21.

If you get an "Authorization Pending" message after submitting your ESTA application, there's no need to worry. Many applicants experience this status. It means that your travel authorization is currently being reviewed because an immediate decision couldn't be made. This response does not indicate any negative outcome. Typically, a determination will be available within 72 hours. To check the status of your application, please revisit the website, select "Check ESTA Status," and choose "Individual Application." You will need to provide your application number, passport number, and birth date.

Finally, if you receive the "Authorization Approved" message, that's good news! Your travel authorization has been approved, and you are authorized to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program. The system will display confirmation of your approved application and provide a payment receipt notice with the payment amount. It's important to note that a travel authorization does not guarantee admission to the United States. The final decision will be made by a Customs and Border Protection officer at the port of entry.

Finally it is crucial to only use the official US ESTA website when applying for your travel authorisation, as unauthorised third-party websites may pose risks. These unofficial websites might scan your personal information and potentially charge you exorbitant fees for their services. By using the official US ESTA website, you can ensure the security and legitimacy of your application, protecting your personal data and avoiding unnecessary financial burdens. It is always recommended to exercise caution and rely on trusted sources to safeguard your information and adhere to the official procedures.
