Checklist - Travelling to the US? How to ensure your travelling experience goes smoothly.

Here are some tips for when you get to the airport and prepare to board your flight. To make the journey smoother, quicker and painless.

Hand luggage. Make sure you follow the rules to speed up the process of going through airport security. All liquids and gels that you are carrying must be 100ml or less and placed in a clear, sealable bag. A sandwich bag is fine but make sure it is clear.

When I get to the airport I take my belt off and stick it in my hand luggage, it expedites the security line process.

Familiarise yourself with airport rules regarding laptops and iPads. If they need to come out of your hand luggage, know where they are and be prepared to place them into the tray. Most of all remember to pick them up again after they have been through the scanner.

Keep your passport and boarding pass in the front compartment of your hand luggage. Handy enough for you to easily access to these important credentials.

Keep a travel charger in your hand luggage. You can use it on the plane or at the airport. Even better get a US plug. Most of the transatlantic carriers will allow you to use a US charger, either way put in your hand luggage.

Carry a pen [or two] with you so you can complete your Customs declaration form.

That leads on to always ensuring you have easy access to the address of your hotel, or where you are staying handy. Again, using this information will allow you to complete your Customs Declaration Form. Save it on your phone to allow easy access.

Take a photograph of your passport. This way, when you complete your Customs Declaration Form you can just take a look at the screenshot on your phone. You're minimising the chance of losing your passport down the side of the seat.

Ask for a spare Customs Declaration Form, we all know how easy easy it is to make a mistake on these forms. It will also save you the embarrassment of asking for another form, if and when you make a mistake.

Carry a little US currency on you. The last thing you'll want to do at the airport is get your wallet out and start counting cash for the all important cab into Manhattan or Airtrain. At least if you research how much your journey will be you'll be more prepared.
