Please don't leave getting an ESTA until the last minute, apply for your ESTA in plenty of time. As soon as you know you're going to the US start to build applying for an ESTA into your time parameters.
Don't leave it until the last week or the last day before you fly because there are, on occasions when approval will take a little longer. I have had occasions where approval for an ESTA has taken 48 hours, most of the time it will be done in less than 24 hours but if you apply during peak times it may take a little longer.
So in summary, apply for your ESTA well in advance of your travel date.
