Visiting the US soon? Here are answers to your frequently asked questions.

Frequently asked questions:

When do I take the pre-departure test to the US? Is it 24 hours or 1 day beforehand?

It is another question I get asked on the US Travel Blog, when do I have to get the US pre-departure COVID test, is it 1 day before travel or 24 hours? The short answer is no more than 1 calendar day. Here is how it worked for me. I was flying out of London Heathrow to Newark Liberty in New Jersey. My flight was scheduled for 4pm on the Friday, however I booked my Qured Supervised COVID Test the day prior, my appointment was at 9am. I had the result back and my good to go, negative COVID result back by 9:10am.

Who do you recommend to use for the pre-departure test to the USA?

I use Qured they offer a great service and I always receive my fit to fly certificate within 10 minutes of uploading to their website.

When will the US end the pre-departure test for international visitors entering the USA?

No date has been set, speculation in the media are suggesting May. Nothing confirmed and remember everything is a rumour but the sooner the better. See this article: https://usuktravel.blogspot.com/2022/04/wall-street-analysts-are-suggesting.html?m=1

When should I purchase my ESTA for the USA?

Please don't leave getting an ESTA until the last minute, apply for your ESTA in plenty of time. As soon as you know you're going to the US start to build applying for an ESTA into your time parameters.   Don't leave it until the last week or the last day before you fly because there are, on occasions when approval will take a little longer. I have had occasions where approval for an ESTA has taken 48 hours,  most of the time it will be done in less than 24 hours but if you apply during peak times it may take a little longer.   So in summary, apply for your ESTA well in advance of your travel date.   An ESTA costs $14, apply via the official US Customs and Border Protection website: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/

I recently recovered from COVID am I still able to travel to the USA?

If you recently tested positive for a COVID then you will need 'documentation of recovery' [your positive COVID-19 viral test result on a sample taken no more than 90 days before the flight's departure from a foreign country and a letter from a licensed healthcare provider or a public health official stating that you were cleared to travel]

So how do you travel to the USA if you recently recovered from COVID?   Some people who tested recently for COVID may recover sufficiently to begin to test negative in advance of travelling and if this is the case then you may not need a COVID Recovery Certificate. You would then just do the usual 1 day pre-departure test. I would, if you have any spare, just do some LFT tests in the run up the 1 day pre-departure COVID test and then you should know how you will test on the day.

If this is not viable and you recently recovered from COVID then the following is likely to be the best option:   Firstly ask your Doctor for a Covid Recovery Certificate. If that doesn't work then I recommend using MedicSpot and I know a lot of our readers have used. There is a quick 5-minute online form to complete, no appointment necessary. You receive your COVID Recovery Certificate in less than 2 hours. The fee is £59 [April 2022] but it's great peace of mind. MedicSpot will need a test certificate or NHS notification with your name and date of birth. The date of your positive Covid-19 Test PDF, screenshot or photo of your positive test result is accepted  They cannot accept pictures of a positive test result.

Remember once you have the certificate you won't need to take a pre-departure COVID test 1 day before departure to the USA. You will still need to complete the US Attestation Form.

Where can I get the latest US Attestation Form?

  1. Wondering what the United Airlines cancellation policy is? To ease the process of refund and cancellation, United Airlines cancellation Policy makes travellers eligible to get the full amount of ticket as a refund if they manage to cancel the flight within 24 hours of booking. The travellers can cancel their tickets via the online website or through a call with customer care executives. Whenever you cancel your flights, every one of the extra arrangements made with it will likewise cancel.
