My quick guide to tipping in the USA

In New York and in the US in general, leaving a tip is not just a way to express gratitude for excellent service—it is also a way of life.

Restaurants.
Tipping in restaurants is very important and makes up an essential part of a waiter or waitress's wage. So please do not forget to tip. Rule of thumb for me in New York City, just double the tax and round up the nearest dollar, that's your tip. That will be acceptable.

If there is a bathroom attend or a cloakroom attendant then tip $1-$2.

In a Bar
In a bar I add $1 for soft drinks or $2 for alcoholic drinks.

In the Cab
If you're in a cab and you, say take a cab ride from the airport then I normally add 15% on to the fare.

Tipping in a hotel
Tipping at a hotel, if staff carry your bags up the stairs I opt for a $1 per bag, if it's heavy or extra service has been provided then increase the tip.

Beauty Spa
Planning to visit the beauty spa, for a haircut or to get your nails done? Then add 15%-20% on to the final amount.
